May is CalFresh Awareness Month: Fighting Hunger in Los Angeles County

May is CalFresh Awareness Month, a time to highlight one of the most important anti-hunger programs that helps individuals and families access the nutritious food they need to thrive.

In addition to the support from the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, neighbors who need additional food assistance are encouraged to participate in the CalFresh program, a comprehensive effort across Los Angeles County to increase access and participation in food assistance, reduce hunger, promote good nutrition, and improve overall health.

What is CalFresh?

CalFresh, known federally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), provides monthly food assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families. Benefits are distributed via an EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card that can be used at most grocery stores and some farmers’ markets, allowing recipients to purchase fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and more.

Why is CalFresh So Important?

To more than four million families in California, the CalFresh program has been a lifeline as many struggle to make ends meet. The CalFresh Program allows families to stretch their food budgets and have access to the nutritious food items we all deserve. These benefits not only feed families but also support farmers, grocers, and local businesses. Access to consistent, nutritious food reduces the risk of chronic illnesses and helps all individuals thrive.

The Food Bank Steps In When Benefits Run Out

Despite the critical support it provides, CalFresh benefits often fall short, especially in high-cost areas like Los Angeles. Rising grocery prices, rent, and utilities mean that many families still face hunger, even with help.

For over 50 years, the LA Regional Food Bank has been committed to closing the hunger gap in our communities. The Food Bank works with hundreds of nonprofit organizations, or partner agencies, to distribute food across the County, from Long Beach to Lancaster. These food distributions touch every corner of the County, providing fresh produce, dairy, and protein-rich foods to our neighbors in need.
