What is Food Insecurity?

What is Food Insecurity?

Food is a basic human need. It fuels our bodies, supports our health, and brings families and communities together. Yet for innumerable neighbors, consistent access to enough nutritious food is not guaranteed. This reality is known as food insecurity, and it affects more people than many might realize.

Understanding Food Insecurity

Food insecurity is defined as the condition of not having access to sufficient food or food of adequate quality to meet one’s basic needs. In many cases, it appears to be uncertain. It can mean wondering where the next meal will come from, stretching groceries to last a few extra days, or choosing between food and other essential expenses such as rent, utilities, or medical care.

Food insecurity exists on a spectrum. Some households experience occasional disruptions in access to food, while others face ongoing challenges that make it difficult to maintain a stable, nutritious diet.

Causes of Food Insecurity

There is no single cause of food insecurity. Instead, it is often the result of a combination of factors, including:

  • The rising cost of living in Los Angeles County is exorbitant. As housing, utilities, and transportation costs increase, families may have less money available for food
  • Low wages or unemployment. Even those who are employed may not earn enough to cover basic needs
  • Unexpected emergencies. Medical bills, job loss, or natural disasters can quickly disrupt financial stability
  • Limited access to grocery stores. In some communities, fresh and affordable food options are not readily available

These challenges can affect anyone, from working families and older adults on fixed incomes to students and individuals facing temporary hardship.

Who is Affected?

Food insecurity impacts people from all walks of life. While it is often associated with unemployment, many individuals experiencing food insecurity are working, sometimes holding multiple jobs, yet still struggle to make ends meet.

Children are especially vulnerable. When families face food insecurity, kids may not always have access to the consistent nutrition they need to grow, learn, and thrive. Older adults may also face difficult choices between paying for food and covering healthcare expenses.

Why It Matters

Access to nutritious food is essential for overall well-being. Food insecurity can have wide-ranging effects, including:

  • Increased risk of chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease
  • Impacts on mental health, including stress and anxiety
  • Challenges in school performance for children
  • Reduced productivity and stability for working adults

Over time, these impacts can affect entire communities, influencing health systems, local economies, and overall quality of life.

How Food Banks Help

Food banks play a vital role in addressing food insecurity by sourcing and distributing food to communities in need. Through partnerships with local agencies, volunteers, and donors, food banks help ensure that individuals and families can access nutritious food when they need it most.

Many organizations also connect people to additional resources, including nutrition education and public assistance programs. These efforts help support more stable, long-term solutions.

How You Can Make a Difference

Food insecurity is a complex issue, but one that communities can address together. You can help by:

  • Donating to organizations working to fight hunger
  • Volunteering your time to support food distribution efforts
  • Raising awareness about the realities of food insecurity
