The Impact of Your Donation to the LA Regional Food Bank

The Impact of Your Donation to the LA Regional Food Bank

When you support the Food Bank, you’re helping feed hundreds of thousands of our neighbors in LA County.

Did you know that 96% of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s revenue goes directly to supporting the community?

When considering donating to any nonprofit organization, many turn to Candid and Charity Navigator to find out if an organization is highly efficient, respected, and rated. The Food Bank is among the highest-rated, with a 96% efficiency rating. For reference, any large nonprofit organization with an efficiency rating of more than 80% is considered a great nonprofit.

However, the Food Bank can’t do it alone. It works with growers, wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and others to get perfectly good food donated to one of the Food Bank warehouses and then distributed to individuals and families throughout Los Angeles County. Volunteers who sort, pack, and distribute food help the Food Bank save money, whereas otherwise, the Food Bank would have to pay full-time staff to do the work.

Helping Neighbors in Need

Thanks to community support, the Food Bank, along with its hundreds of partner agencies across LA County, is able to maximize its reach. Hundreds of thousands of individuals from all walks of life benefit monthly from the Food Bank’s food assistance throughout the County.

Households like Anthony and Ariella’s, a young couple who live in Koreatown, attend the food distribution at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Living with one income, money is tight in their household, so any help they can get goes a long way.

While they know what kind of foods to expect at each distribution, the variety helps them explore different recipes and eat new foods they wouldn’t normally purchase.

The recent Eaton fire in Altadena destroyed thousands of structures, including the home of Julius and his wife. Their home had been in the family for almost 50 years, with Julius meeting his wife right next door when his sister lived there, another home that was also destroyed. They had lived in their home for ten years, sharing it with their daughter and granddaughter.

Although Julius stayed behind to try to save his home, the fire and the winds were too strong to keep it alive. The family was displaced in Inglewood, and upon hearing about a resource fair at SoFi Stadium, Julius decided to attend and see what they could use, and without a doubt, food assistance was gladly accepted.

However, food assistance is not only available in times of emergency. Katia Ahmed, Wellness Coordinator for the Pasadena Unified School District, recently volunteered for a food distribution at Madison Elementary in Pasadena. Throughout the year, Ahmed continues to work alongside the Food Bank and the CalFresh program to support families who may struggle with food insecurity at any point.

“During crises, humanity comes together, and it’s amazing how we reach out and help each other out regardless of the situation we are in,” Ahmed said. “However, in a regular time, we also need to support our families. The LARFB produce distributions, and the work we do with CalFresh helps whether it’s a crisis time or regular time as our families need it.”
