How Diaper Assistance Helps Strengthen Families Across LA County

How Diaper Assistance Helps Strengthen Families Across LA County

Raising a young child comes with many essential expenses, and diapers are among the most important. For families with infants and toddlers, having a reliable supply of diapers is critical to a child’s health, hygiene, and daily comfort.

Yet diapers can also represent a significant household expense. Across Los Angeles County, many families are already navigating the high costs of living, from rent and utilities to groceries and childcare. As these expenses continue to rise, the cost of diapers can create additional financial strain, forcing some parents and caregivers to make difficult choices between competing necessities. Diaper assistance helps alleviate that burden, allowing families to direct limited resources toward other essential needs while ensuring their children have access to the care they deserve.

Understanding the Impact of Diaper Need

Unlike many other household necessities, diapers are not covered by federal nutrition assistance programs such as SNAP or WIC. Families must purchase them out of pocket, regardless of their financial circumstances.

As a result, diaper need remain a significant challenge for households across the country.

For families already balancing competing financial priorities, the cost of diapers can force difficult choices between purchasing essential supplies and covering other necessities.

Supporting Families Beyond Food

“Diaper assistance is a critical resource for many families across Los Angeles County,” said Elizabeth Jimenez, Partnerships Manager at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. “In 2025, we helped serve more than 52,000 households and approximately 60,000 children by distributing over 1.7 million diapers through our partner agency network. Considering that one in two families in America experiences diaper need, this support can make a meaningful difference for families who are working hard to make ends meet.”

The Food Bank’s diaper assistance efforts are made possible through partnerships with community organizations that help distribute supplies directly to families in need.

The Impact of Diaper Assistance

For many families, diaper assistance provides more than a box of diapers. It can offer financial relief, peace of mind, and reassurance during times of uncertainty.

Food Bank partner agencies regularly witness the impact these distributions have on the families they serve. Jimenez recalled hearing from a partner agency that assisted a mother living in her vehicle with two small children. When she received diapers through the program, the mother became emotional and expressed profound gratitude for the support.

While every family’s circumstances are different, stories like these underscore how access to essential supplies can make an immediate and meaningful difference. For parents facing housing instability, job loss, unexpected expenses, or other hardships, diaper assistance can help alleviate one burden and allow them to focus on caring for their children.

As economic challenges continue to impact households across Los Angeles County, programs that provide food, diapers, and other essential resources remain an important source of help thanks to the support of our community. Together, #WeFeedLA.
