The Food Bank’s Backpack Program: A Lifeline for Families Who Rely on School Lunches

The Food Bank’s Backpack Program: A Lifeline for Families Who Rely on School Lunches

Families like Laura’s depend on programs like the Food Bank’s Backpack Program to help feed their families when school is not in session.

In a County where 1 in 4 children may not know where their next meal is coming from, programs like the LA Regional Food Bank’s Backpack Program are a lifeline for families. Many children and their families rely on school breakfasts and lunches for sustenance, but what happens when school is not in session or the weekend comes around?

For over 20 years, the Food Bank’s Backpack Program has provided nutritious food to children and their families each month. Each month, each child receives a box of shelf-stable items, cereal, snacks, and protein to help provide meals throughout the weekend, and that way, they return to school ready to learn.

Laura, a mom volunteer at Main Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, sees firsthand how impactful each food box is for each child. As children pass by the distribution area and see the boxes of food being prepared, Laura sees the smiles and joy it brings them. She shared, “It’s a very nice reaction, and we as parents feel happy to see the children’s joy when this happens.”

In a time when families are struggling with inflation, programs like the Backpack Program serve as a lifeline and a breath of fresh air for many. Consistent food assistance helps stabilize families and allows children to grow, learn, and thrive.

It’s thanks to the community’s generosity that programs like these continue to serve the most vulnerable, including children and their families. If you are in a position to do so, consider donating to the Food Bank today.
