How the CalFresh Healthy Living Program Empowers Communities Through Education

The CalFresh Healthy Living Program has been helping make positive changes in the lives of thousands of neighbors.

At the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, addressing hunger goes beyond distributing food—it means empowering neighbors with knowledge, tools, and confidence to live healthier lives. Through the CalFresh Healthy Living – Category 4 Program, the Food Bank provides culturally relevant, trauma-informed nutrition education that reaches thousands of families throughout Los Angeles County.

What is the CalFresh Healthy Living Program?

Part of the larger Nutrition Education Program, the CalFresh Healthy Living Program focuses on hands-on nutrition education, health-centered food demonstrations, and long-term technical assistance for partner agencies.

This program, supported by the Food Bank’s Nutrition Education team, supports 12 local food pantries and has provided nearly 550 classes, reaching over 1,600 participants, since 2020.

Hands-On Learning, Real-Life Impact

CalFresh Healthy Living classes are short, engaging, and practical—designed for people who may have limited time but are eager to improve their health. Each 5-week course includes:

  • Foundations of Nutrition: Understanding food groups and balanced meals.
  • Eat the Rainbow: Exploring the health benefits of colorful fruits and vegetables.
  • Rethink Your Drink: Learning about added sugars and making healthier beverage choices.
  • Smart Shopping: Navigating the grocery store on a budget while choosing nutritious options.
  • Chronic Disease Prevention: Tips for managing diabetes, heart disease, and incorporating stress-reducing habits like meditation.

Each session includes a live recipe demo that reinforces the nutrition lesson, allowing participants to apply what they learn in real time.

A Focus on Culture and Community

One of the program’s standout elements is its train-the-trainer model. At sites like Central City Neighborhood Partners (CCNP) in the Pico-Union-Westlake neighborhood, local ‘promotoras,’ or community health workers, are trained to lead the classes themselves. This peer-led model deepens trust and ensures the lessons resonate across languages, backgrounds, and lived experiences.

“When you hear health tips from someone who lives down the street, they just stick more,” says Katerina Mesesan, Food Bank Nutrition Education Supervisor. “Our promotoras are helping their neighbors cook healthier, drink more water, and build long-term habits.

“People are often told the foods they grew up with are ‘unhealthy. We want to honor those traditions and show how they can still be part of a nutritious lifestyle,” she added.

Why Nutrition Education Matters

This program, among others, is at risk of being cut due to federal budget changes. However, CalFresh Healthy Living helps our neighbors make better food choices. If you’re interested in supporting Nutrition Education programs or other Food Bank programs, consider making a donation today.
