CalFresh Awareness Month: Strengthening Food Security Across Los Angeles County
May is CalFresh Awareness Month, a time to highlight one of the most effective programs in the fight against hunger. CalFresh, California’s version of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), provides critical, monthly food assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families, helping them put nutritious meals on the table and maintain their health and well-being.
What is CalFresh?
CalFresh provides monthly food assistance distributed via an EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card that can be used at most grocery stores and some farmers’ markets, allowing recipients to purchase fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and more.

Beyond helping neighbors, CalFresh also strengthens local economies by supporting grocers, farmers, and small businesses. Most importantly, it provides stability by ensuring families can rely on consistent access to nutritious food even during challenging times.
The Impact of the Government Shutdown in 2025
The importance of CalFresh became even more evident during the 2025 federal government shutdown. As benefits were delayed or paused, approximately 1.5 million residents in Los Angeles County faced sudden uncertainty about how they would afford food.
Without CalFresh benefits, many households were forced to turn to emergency food assistance. The Food Bank saw surging demand, underscoring the essential role of CalFresh in preventing hunger before it begins.
Bridging the Hunger Gap
During the shutdown, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and its partners mobilized quickly to meet the growing need. With support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Food Bank expanded food purchasing, launched additional pop-up and drive-through distributions, and strengthened food distribution to its hundreds of partner agencies throughout the County.
This rapid response ensured that families impacted by delayed benefits could still access food. The Food Bank also plays a critical role year-round by helping residents apply for CalFresh, providing outreach and education, and connecting neighbors to both immediate and long-term nutrition resources.
