Friends Supporting Friends: Vida and Eugenia Find Nourishment and Community Through the Food Bank

The RJC Foundation, in partnership with the Food Banks, holds food distributions in Panorama City, an at-risk community.

For many older adults living on fixed incomes, affording nutritious food is a growing challenge. Rising costs of groceries, medical bills, and housing often mean difficult choices must be made at the end of the month. For friends Vida and Eugenia, those choices became a little easier thanks to the RJC Foundation, a proud partner agency of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

Vida and Eugenia attended the food distribution together, which was within walking distance of their senior home. There, they would get fresh produce and other items that would help ease their grocery budget. Eugenia attended the distribution for the first time when the Food Bank met her, but she was put at ease when she was welcomed with open arms and a smile from the RJC Foundation team and volunteers.

For Vida, attending food pantries is one way to help with her grocery budget. While she loves what she can get at the RJC Foundation, she sometimes attends other food distributions in order to pay for other essentials. Her retirement income simply isn’t enough.

The Importance of Nutrition for Older Adults

Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining health and independence for older adults. Access to nutritious food can help manage chronic conditions, support stronger immune systems, and improve overall well-being. However, seniors are among the most vulnerable to food insecurity, with many facing barriers such as limited income or mobility challenges.

Through partner agencies like the RJC Foundation, the LA Regional Food Bank helps bridge this gap by ensuring seniors like Vida and Eugenia have access to balanced, nutritious groceries. From fresh fruits and vegetables to protein-rich foods, these distributions provide the building blocks for healthier aging.

Building a Stronger, Healthier Community

Stories like Vida and Eugenia’s highlight the importance of food assistance programs in sustaining not only physical health but also emotional well-being. Sharing meals and experiences strengthens bonds, reduces isolation, and gives seniors the support they need to thrive.
