The Food Bank Provides Nutritious Food to Neighbors Seeking Assistance

An average of 900,000 individuals seek food assistance each month from the Food Bank or one of its partner agencies. Nutritious foods is top priority for the Food Bank.

Every month, an average of 900,000 individuals turn to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and its partner agencies seeking food assistance that will ensure they and their families have something to eat that day, and the following.

Regardless of one’s background, age, or socioeconomic status, a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients is fundamental to maintaining optimal health and well-being. Nutritious food fuels bodies, enhances cognitive function, and strengthens our immune systems, enabling us to lead productive and fulfilling lives. It also plays a critical role in preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. By prioritizing a diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, individuals can improve their quality of life and contribute to a healthier, more vibrant community.

What’s In a Food Bank Box?

The Food Bank works with growers, wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to get the freshest foods to distribute to the public. Contrary to popular belief, the Food Bank distributes far more than just canned goods. In fact, 97% of the food it provides is considered nutritious.

Food recipients can usually expect fresh fruits and vegetables that are gleaned, sorted, and packed at one of the Food Bank’s warehouses, along with shelf-stable items like rice, legumes, and canned goods. Some distributions also include dairy products, eggs, and a variety of proteins such as chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp. Depending on the family size, these distributed items can last approximately one to two weeks.
