For older adults living on a fixed income, life is already hard enough without having to deal with an increase in rent, utilities, medical costs and transportation. But what if a senior doesn’t receive a retirement check or income from Social Security?
When older adults live day-to-day with any support they can get from odd jobs or family support, they often opt to skip meals or medication to purchase food with whatever money they have. Others living in the same situation choose to visit their local Los Angeles Regional Food Bank partner agency or food pantry to get access to nutritious food items and help them put food on the table for themselves and their families.
Betty is among those older adults who receive little to no retirement income. While her daughter and son-in-law help provide for them where they can, Betty chooses to walk to the St. James Episcopal Church’s food distribution on Thursdays, just blocks from where she lives in Koreatown, to pick up essential food items.
“I’m very happy that with our building nearby, I’m able to line up and get help,” said Betty. “For those benefits that we’re getting once a week, it helps us a lot, especially the basic foods, the rice, the milk, the canned goods, it really helps us.”
