How Maria de Jesus Makes the Most Out of Food Distributions at Hollywood Community Housing

Maria, a retired senior, has learned how to make the most out of the food she receives at Hollywood Community Housing

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and its hundreds of partner agencies across LA County serve thousands of seniors looking for nutritious food to help them make it to the end of the month or even week. In 2023, the Food Bank served more than 80,000 seniors per month through direct and indirect programs, helping them get nutritious food on their tables.

Often, seniors opt to cut out necessary items like meals, medicine and doctor’s visits to afford rent, utilities or transportation. Thankfully, the Food Bank and its partner agencies are available to provide nutritious food to help maintain good health and put food on the table.

Seniors Make the Most Out of Food Distributions

While items at the grocery store and rent continue to increase in price, the senior community is forced to continuously reconsider their monthly budget to fit into their fixed income.

Maria de Jesus is among those seniors who are looking at stretching their budget the most that they can. By attending the distribution at Hollywood Community Housing, she’s getting essential items that she can make the most of. For example, if Maria receives almonds, she can use them as snacks, but she can also make almond milk at home that otherwise she would have to purchase at the grocery store.

“This helps me because things are getting really expensive, so this helps us more, that way, we don’t have to spend a lot at the grocery store,” said Maria.

Without proper nutrition, more senior adults risk increased disability, decreased resistance to infections, weakened immune systems and declined mental health. Older adults must maintain a nutritious diet, as doctors often prescribe medicine, assuming that patients reach a healthy caloric intake threshold.
