How One Food Box Can Nourish an Entire Community
One food box provided by the Food Bank to many walks of life, positively impacting our communities
When someone donates to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, their support does much more than provide a single meal—it strengthens families, uplifts communities, and brings hope to neighbors across LA County. One bag of rice or a single food box can give a senior, a child, or a family not only a meal to eat, but also a sense of hope, proof that they are not forgotten and that there are people who care deeply about them, even though they might not know them personally.
The hope and optimism sparked by a single bag of rice or food box often spreads beyond the person who receives it, lifting the spirits of their family, friends, and community in a ripple effect of care and connection.
Who the Food Bank Serves
As of October 2025, over 1,000,000 individuals seek food assistance each month through Food Bank programs and partnerships with hundreds of other organizations throughout Los Angeles County. Individuals from all walks of life, from single-income to multiple-income families, often need additional support from time to time. Food recipients may look like:
A senior living alone, who uses a food box to stretch their budget and prepare several filling meals throughout the week. For older adults on fixed incomes, this food kit means comfort and stability—helping them choose nourishment over sacrifice.
Take Felipe and Clara, for example. Felipe has undergone eight surgeries to be cleared of cancer, with Clara by his side to care for him. But now, retirement has become much more expensive, so they turn to the Desert Reign food distribution in Downey for assistance.
A parent working multiple jobs, who turns the same food kit into dinner for their family. Paired with vegetables and protein items from the Food Bank, it becomes part of a warm meal that brings the family together at the end of a long day.
Maria had just retired when she was suddenly given custody of her grandkids. Now, she has to take on a part-time job to help provide for herself and her grandchildren. Attending the Foothill Unity Center food pantry helps ease her budget and feed her grandkids.
A child who may depend on that meal for the energy to focus and learn in school. For many children facing food insecurity, consistent access to balanced meals helps them thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally.
A multigenerational household, where grandparents, parents, and children share meals together. The food provided by the Food Bank not only fills plates but also preserves a family’s ability to stay connected and resilient during tough times.
For grandparent Mirza, being unemployed has, in a way, helped her family and eased their budget. She’s able to stay home and care for her grandkids while her grown children work, easing their childcare budget. However, Mirza takes it to the next level to help her family by going to the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF), where she picks up essential food items to help feed herself and her family.
When receiving food assistance, all of these people receive not only nourishment but hope and love. As their optimism and hope grow, the ripple effect is felt throughout entire communities. That’s how a single box of food can strengthen an entire community!
Your support—whether through a donation, volunteering, or spreading awareness—helps one food box reach many. Consider making a contribution to the Food Bank today.
