Domitila Wants to See Her Grandson Thrive. The Food Bank is Here to Help.

Domitila Wants to See Her Grandson Thrive. The Food Bank is Here to Help.

Domitila is retired, but has custody of her grandson. Helping him thrive includes receiving food assistance from the Food Bank.

When anyone turns to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, or one of its hundreds of partner agencies or programs, it’s because they are truly in need of food assistance. Whether it be one-time, temporary, or supplemental food, the Food Bank is here to help.

For over 20 years, the Food Bank’s Backpack Program has helped thousands of families put food on the table when school is not in session, whether it’s the weekend or summer break. Each food box contains sufficient, nutritious food items, including shelf-stable items, bread, produce, protein, and dairy products.

Domitila is among the thousands of families who benefit from the Food Bank’s Backpack Program at Nevin Elementary in Los Angeles. Domitila is retired, but she has custody of her five-year-old grandson, whom she treats like her own. Her retirement income simply isn’t enough to fully provide for her and her grandson.

Thankfully, programs like the Backpack Program help provide nutritious meals and put food on the table.

Families across Los Angeles County are struggling to keep up with inflation, making it harder for them to cover everyday costs, utilities, and transportation. Additionally, 1 in 4 children struggles with hunger. Those children who don’t get enough to eat may struggle to learn and develop at the same pace as their classmates. Hunger also makes it harder for kids to concentrate and succeed in school.

Considering the aforementioned, and Domitila’s fixed income, programs like the Backpack Program are a breath of fresh air for her as she tries to give her grandson the best life she can. It’s thanks to the community’s generosity that Food Bank programs and distributions are made possible. If you are in a position to do so, consider donating to the Food Bank and supporting programs like the Backpack Program.
