Martha, a Volunteer at the Church of the Redeemer Food Pantry, Provides Food Assistance to Neighbors and Her Family

Martha has been volunteering with the Church of the Redeemer food pantry for five years. Learn more about her story.

For different individuals, a box of food can mean different things. While for some, a food box can be a supplement to the food they already purchase at the grocery store, for others, it means the world.

The rising cost of food, rent, utilities, and transportation is affecting everybody. Households, even with multiple incomes, are struggling to make ends meet and keep up with the rising costs. Over a million individuals turn to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and its partner agencies for food assistance each month as a way to alleviate their budgets even slightly.

Martha, a volunteer at the Church of the Redeemer in Baldwin Park, knows how much local families have suffered. When she started volunteering at the Church’s food pantry at the peak of the pandemic, she heard many stories from families who lost their jobs and saw the pantry as their only source of food.

Five years later, as inflation continues to impact families across the country, Martha’s family is also feeling the impact. While her husband works, Martha works in the household, taking care of her children and her home, making sure there’s always something to eat. However, every time Martha goes to the grocery store, she’s spending more and more money on fewer food items. When the opportunity arises, Martha is given a food box to take home, just like the one given at the Church of the Redeemer’s food distribution.

Martha is happy to bless others with a food box, but when the opportunity to take home a food box comes up, she’s also happy to bless her family and alleviate her family’s budget.

“It’s not the reason why I volunteer,” Martha said. “But if I can take home a blessing for my family, then why not?”

Millions of individuals struggle to put food on the table each month. Consider making a donation to the Food Bank and helping a neighbor in need.
