How Food Assistance Strengthens Families at Main Street Elementary

How Food Assistance Strengthens Families at Main Street Elementary

The Food Bank’s Backpack Program helps alleviate hunger for thousands of children across LA County

For over 20 years, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s Backpack Program has been providing food assistance to thousands of children and their families each year. In a County where 1 in 4 children don’t know where their next meal will come from, the Backpack Program is designed to alleviate hunger for kids who rely on school meals during the week don’t go hungry over the weekend.

At Main Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, the program’s impact is visible every month through Victoria, a mother, food recipient, and longtime volunteer in her school community.

For nearly two decades, Victoria has served as a parent volunteer, supporting families just like her own. As she helps distribute food to neighbors, she witnesses firsthand how essential these monthly distributions are. Families receive staples such as potatoes, bread, and protein items, helping them prepare real meals at home.

“Our families, thankfully, feel blessed and appreciate your support,” Victoria shared. “You provide us with food each month. We have a secured meal on our table, and our families are very grateful for that.”

The Food Bank Fills in the Gaps

During the school day, many students rely on breakfast and lunch provided on campus. But when the final bell rings — or when school is not in session — food insecurity often becomes most visible.

Victoria explained that while children eat breakfast and lunch during school hours, dinner can be uncertain for some households. Programs, like the Backpack Program, help ensure students return home to a guaranteed evening meal, easing parents’ stress and helping children stay nourished and ready to learn.

The need becomes greater during weekends, holidays, and school breaks. Without access to school meals, families must stretch already tight budgets further. A single food box can bridge that gap, helping parents provide consistent nutrition when resources are limited.

If you are in a position to do so, consider donating to the Food Bank and supporting programs like the Backpack Program.
