Supporting Student Success Through Food Assistance: The Impact of the Food Bank’s Presence in College Campuses

The Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry aims to meet neighbors where they need it, including on college campuses.

At Pasadena City College (PCC), the Lancer Care Basic Needs program helps students access the resources they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom. A key part of that support is the college’s longstanding partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, which helps provide nutritious food to students through a monthly Mobile Food Pantry and other food assistance programs.

According to Sesley Lewis, Director of Lancer Care Basic Needs, the partnership plays a critical role in helping students overcome barriers that could otherwise derail their educational goals.

“We try our best to meet the student before it becomes something that we have to address from a reactionary perspective,” Lewis said. “We’re here to support students through those crises and hopefully alleviate at least some of the stressors they’re experiencing.”

Unfortunately, the myth that it is normal for college students to struggle with food and nutrition insecurity makes them believe that they shouldn’t ask for help or that food assistance isn’t available. Additionally, there’s a misconception that college students need only academic support, while many are balancing significant financial pressures as they pursue higher education.

Some students support children or other family members. Others are foster youth, first-generation college students, or individuals without a strong support network. Many are working while attending classes full-time. As food prices and living expenses continue to rise, access to food assistance can provide meaningful relief.

Each week, Lancer Care serves approximately 1,500 student visits through its various programs and services. Behind every visit is a student working toward a better future.

“It all goes a long way,” Lewis said. “It really does make an impact, and students feel it personally.”

One of the unique benefits of the Mobile Food Pantry is its integration into campus life, making it easier for students and community members to access food without feeling singled out.

By creating an environment where food assistance is visible, accessible, and community-centered, the program helps reduce stigma that can sometimes prevent people from seeking help.

Through partnerships like the one between Pasadena City College and the Food Bank, thousands of students each year receive more than food; they receive support, encouragement, and a stronger foundation to pursue their educational goals and build brighter futures. If you are in a position to do so, consider donating to the Food Bank and supporting programs like the Mobile Food Pantry program.
