Providing for families in difficult times

Providing for families in difficult times

Silvia and her children.

When Silvia’s husband left, she knew money was going to be tighter than ever. She receives some financial assistance, but it only covers her rent. One of her children has cerebral palsy, making it difficult for her to work full-time. Between rent and medical bills, Silvia simply does not have the money to afford groceries for her family.

She says discovering Friends In Deed food pantry in Pasadena—one of our partner agencies—was a huge relief during a chaotic, difficult time.

“I needed a place to come when I needed help,” Silvia says. “But I also wanted to help.”

Giving Back to Her Community

Silvia volunteers two days a week at one of the local food pantries, and also receives food for her family.

Silvia helps translate between Spanish and English for the staff at the food pantry and the guests coming to receive food. The food pantry is open three days a week, and Silvia volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday.

She is grateful to have the opportunity to give back to a place that has been so helpful to her. She also wanted to show her children the importance of helping others. “I love bringing the children here because it teaches them to help and be a good example,” she says.

Having a place to come and receive food each month has helped Silvia and her family get by. She is so appreciative to the donors who make it possible for her to take home nutritious food for her children.

“It’s beautiful what they do for every family,” Silvia says.
