Food Pantries, Like the Fred Jordan Mission, Help Individuals and Families Down on Their Luck

Food Pantries, Like the Fred Jordan Mission, Help Individuals and Families Down on Their Luck

For over 80 years, the Fred Jordan Mission food pantry has been providing hot meals and food assistance to its surrounding community.

Every month, hundreds of thousands of individuals turn to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for food assistance. Whether the assistance is short-term or long-term, the Food Bank and its partner agencies provide food to those seeking it, no questions asked.

Among those partner agencies is the Fred Jordan Mission, located in the heart of Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles. For more than 80 years, the Fred Jordan Mission has welcomed individuals and families alike, offering a hot meal to the unhoused or a food box to the housed and in need of food assistance.

Despite contrary belief, Skid Row is home to thousands of housed individuals, not just unhoused. Many of these individuals and families struggle to make ends meet or have fallen on hard times, and fortunately, the Fred Jordan Mission is there to help.

When Lieutenant Roland first moved to Los Angeles from his native Louisiana, friends introduced him to the Fred Jordan Mission. Here, Roland received a hot meal and clothing while he settled down in town. Having a hot meal every day made a difference in Roland’s day, as he describes the meals at Fred Jordan as “the best food he’s had.”

While Roland was unhoused at one point, he is now housed and is giving back to the Mission that helped him so much when he was down. Every week, Roland heads over to the Fred Jordan Mission and helps in any way he can, and from time to time, enjoys a hot meal that brings joy to his day.
