Federal Budget Update

President Obama signed a temporary spending measure to keep the government funded while Congress continues to battle over a longer-term budget.  The three-week budget bill included $6 billion in spending cuts.  Had the legislation failed, the federal government and many federally funded programs would have faced a shutdown. Congress must pass another bill to avoid a shutdown.  Combined with the previous shortterm spending measure Congress passed, the new House majority has already forced $10 billion in cuts from this year's budget.

Please contact your congressional representative to let them know you don't want to see cuts to any of the federal feeding programs.

STATE UPDATE

Budget cuts to various state programs will send more people looking for food assistance in 2011.  As the 2011-2012 budget tries to close an enormous $19 billion shortfall, many social services that help those facing food insecurity see major cuts in funding.  The resulting cuts will cause more California residents to seek food assistance.
Please contact your state legislators and ask them to not make large budget cuts on the programs that so many low-income people rely on.
